Pulsatory patterns in active viscoelastic fluids with distinct relaxation time scales

چکیده

Abstract Developing tissues need to pattern themselves in space and time. A prevalent mechanism achieve this are pulsatile active stresses generated by the actin cytoskeleton. Active gel theory is a powerful tool model dynamics of cytoskeletal formation. In theoretical models, influence viscoelastic nature cytoskeleton has so far only been investigated incorporation one relaxation time scale. Here, using minimal theory, we show that distinct shear areal times sufficient drive surfaces with single molecular regulator.

Beating patterns of filaments in viscoelastic fluids.

Many swimming microorganisms, such as bacteria and sperm, use flexible flagella to move through viscoelastic media in their natural environments. In this paper we address the effects a viscoelastic fluid has on the motion and beating patterns of elastic filaments. We treat both a passive filament which is actuated at one end and an active filament with bending forces arising from internal motor...

Short-time inertial response of viscoelastic fluids measured with Brownian motion and with active probes.

We have directly observed short-time stress propagation in viscoelastic fluids using two optically trapped particles and a fast interferometric particle-tracking technique. We have done this both by recording correlations in the thermal motion of the particles and by measuring the response of one particle to the actively oscillated second particle. Both methods detect the vortexlike flow patter...

Undulatory swimming in viscoelastic fluids.

The effects of fluid elasticity on the swimming behavior of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans are experimentally investigated by tracking the nematode's motion and measuring the corresponding velocity fields. We find that fluid elasticity hinders self-propulsion. Compared to Newtonian solutions, fluid elasticity leads to up to 35% slower propulsion. Furthermore, self-propulsion decreases as e...

Truncation of Scales by Time Relaxation

We study a time relaxation regularization of flow problems proposed and tested extensively by Stolz and Adams. The aim of the relaxation term is to drive the unresolved fluctuations in a computational simulation to zero exponentially fast by an appropriate and often problem dependent choice of its coefficient; this relaxation term is thus intermediate between a tunable numerical stabilization a...
